The intention of this piece was to illustrate the deeper human connections made beyond surface level interactions in my newly found friends. It began as an encounter at my cousin’s birthday that sprouted into a friendship during the social restrictions of covid. Whilst this was refreshing from the lonely past-time of lockdown, these conversations remained at a surface level. Thus, we decided to collectively visit one another’s homes to get to know one another on a more intimate level. This journey was connected by trains that lead to each friend like a social web centralised at Central Station. I used portraiture as a means to capture a more intimate view of their personalities—focusing on capturing the beauty I saw in each person despite knowing that we all have flaws. Drawing from the traditional Japanese artform of Kintsugi, in which broken pieces of ceramics are bonded back together with gold, I developed my own visual language by capturing my observations of parts of their personalities through photography and piecing them back together in a silhouette of their face. This collage mosaic featured aspects of the physical journey through the diagram of the train network, their hobbies and the location in which we met. This series of emotive graphics resonated with me especially at the time, where despite our friendship forming during uncertain times, our golden bond persevered.
